CONSERVATION

Monach Farm is managed under DEFRA’s Countryside Stewardship Scheme. Countryside Stewardship is an agri-environment scheme which provides funding to farmers and other land managers in England who deliver effective environmental management on their land.

Its primary objectives are to:

Conserve wildlife (biodiversity)

Maintain and enhance landscape quality and character

Protect the historic environment and natural resources

Promote public access and understanding of the countryside

Natural resource protection

Monach Farm has planted and restored hedgerows, restored arable prairie to smaller grass fields using local conservation grass/herb mixes and does not use inorganic fertilizers. There is also a permissive access around part of the farm. A large increase in bird-life has resulted from this work including successful broods from ground-nesting birds.

We particularly encourage Farm Educational Visits and Work Experience under this scheme. We have regular visits from Cambridge University Veterinary School and have had students from France, Belgium and Portugal making use of the scheme.
