MONACH FARM

Caprilatte ice cream which is made from Monach goats milk and produced at our Butterfly Lodge farm has won the Essex Local Food Producer Award for 2009

Monach Farm is a traditional livestock farm with special emphasis on rare and unusual breeds of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry.

The goat dairy is fully approved by the EHO and the milk is sold to a cheese processorand made into our 'Caprilatte' ice cream. The milk and cheese may be purchased from the farm; we usually sell these items frozen however they can be fresh if prior notice is given.

Goats milk is always available for purchase from both farms. Fresh or frozen in 1 litre bottles.

We also sell frozen beef and lamb from our herds, which are naturally and traditionally, reared without the use of antibiotics and growth promoters. The meat is always available as it is kept in a cold store at –25C, there is also a selection kept in the freezer in the port-a-cabin. Please ask for details.

The Monach herd of pedigree dairy goats is known world wide for its high lactation and longevity. Animals from this herd have assisted breeding programs in China, Africa, South America, the West Indies and across Europe in Germany, France, Denmark, Spain and Switzerland. It has also been prominent in helping Ethiopian farms re-establish themselves as part of the Farm Africa Project.

During the spring and summer visitors to the farm may be able to help feed the lambs and kids. We encourage all our visitors to gain contact with the animals, you may even be lucky enough to witness a new arrival.

During the summer months we exhibit the goats at all the major Country Shows including East of England, Suffolk, Herts. Co & Norfolk. Several of the adult goats hold breed champion qualifications.

We run livestock husbandry and small farming courses for those interested in this way of life. The farm is also used by Cambridge Vet School, as a training centre for the students.

Please may we request that parents keep their children under supervision whilst visiting the farm, in order to make the visit safe and enjoyable for both themselves and the animals.
